György Szapáry, Ambassador of Hungary to the United States will visit Houston on Friday, March 1, 2013. Ambassador Szapáry will deliver a lecture about the Hungarian political situation and the current state of the Hungarian economy. He will also speak about the American-Hungarian relations and questions concerning Hungarian Americans. After the presentation Ambassador Szapáry will answer questions from the audience.

György Szapáry presented his letter of credence to President Barack Obama on February 23, 2011. Prior his assignment as Ambassador, he held the position of Chief Economic Policy Advisor to the Prime Minister of Hungary, Viktor Orbán. Ambassador Szapáry holds a PhD in economics from the University of Louvain, Belgium. He has worked 27 years at the International Monetary Fund in Washington DC. He returned to Hungary in 1990 where he served as the Senior Resident Representative of the IMF until 1993. During 1993-2007, he served as Deputy Governor of the Central Bank of Hungary. He also taught economics at the Central European University in Budapest.

Szapáry György 2011. januárjától tölti be a nagyköveti pozíciót. 1956-ban hagyta el Magyarországot, tanulmányait Belgiumban folytatta. Közgazdászként 27 évig szolgált a Nemzetközi Valutalapnál Washingtonban. 1990-ben tért vissza Magyarországra. 1993-2007 között a Magyar Nemzeti Bank alelnöki és elnöki tanácsadói pozícióját töltötte be. Nagyköveti kinevezését megelőzően a Miniszterelnök úr gazdaságpolitikai főtanácsadója volt.
